When most people hear of the town of Point Pleasant, WV,
they think of the Mothman and the Silver Bridge Disaster.
While these things are also associated with this quaint little
place, a much lesser known gem is the Lowe Hotel.
The building was originally erected in 1904. In recent years,
it was purchased and renovated by its current owners. We
were intrigued by the stories we had found about this
building, so we booked the two "haunted" rooms, 314 and
316. When we called to make reservations, the woman on
the phone said "Oh, you want the haunted rooms." It was
already sounding like an interesting trip.
When we checked in, in November of 2005, we found the
owners to be very nice and informative. The husband told
us a few stories, many of which he did not know if they were
true. It is believed that Sid Hatfield frequents Room 314.
When asked why they thought it to be him, they said they
didn't know, but that was the story that has been told for
years. They also didn't even know that every hallway clock
was stopped at 4:20, so there's no explanation for that.
One member of our group who went on this investigation,
Jodie, is a direct descendant of the Hatfields (her great
grandmother was Daisy May Hatfield). We thought that
perhaps she could draw him out. She wrote him a letter and
left it on the desk in the room while we went to investigate
other parts of the hotel. The owners said they were
completely booked, but were kind enough to allow us to do
whatever we wanted, as long as we didn't intrude on
anyone's privacy.
Tom took great care in setting up 3 cameras in Room 314
and 2 in Room 316. We allowed them to run while we all
went out to eat dinner. When we came back, we took the
equipment out of Room 316 for anyone who wanted to turn
in early. We then set up a motion detector in Room 314 and
headed up to the 4th floor ballroom.
Tom set up a camera while the rest of us took pictures.
Jodie and Tom both had uneasy feelings and didn't want to
have their backs toward the middle of the dance floor. Jodie
felt very strange under one particular ceiling fan. Heidi kept
having the sensation of being pushed forward. We took
EMF readings, but only got spikes along the floor where
electrical wiring ran in the ceiling to the floor below. We also
did some EVP sweeps.
On our way back to the room to get a drink, we heard
something, but weren't sure what it was. As we got closer to
the room, it got louder. Suddenly, Tom said, "The motion
detector!" Yes, it was going off. Apparently, it had been for
some time. We reviewed the video, but couldn't find
anything. There were several Japanese Beetles in the room,
but the unit shouldn't be sensitive enough to pick up an
insect. Heidi suggested it could have landed right on the
detector, setting it off. We will never know for sure, but
nothing was captured on video.
As we sat in room 314 taking pictures and talking, Heidi felt a
light tug on her pant leg. She dismissed it at first, but felt it
again. This time she alerted Tom and Jodie, who
immediately started taking pictures and doing EMF and EVP
sweeps. All together, Heidi felt about 5 tugs, but no
evidence turned up.
While Tom and Pete waited in the hallway outside the rooms
for Jodie, they heard a doorknob to one of the other rooms
jiggle, as if it were about to open. The hotel is very old, and
therefore very noisy. But the door never opened.
It was a spectacular night. We all had some type of feeling
or experience, but we're looking for evidence. Out of 500+
photos taken that night, only 4 turned out with possible orbs.
We also have one possible orb on video. Audio is still
pending at this time.
We cannot wait to go back. Heidi is asking every weekend to
go; she loved the place. We're hoping to make one more
trip before the bad weather hits for the winter, so check back
for updates.
Is this location really haunted? Does Sid Hatfield have an
attachment to this historic building? We don't know yet, but
we intend to find out. You should find out for yourselves, as
well. It's a beautiful old building decorated with wonderful
furnishings. More information can be found at their website
at www.thelowehotel.com. You just can't find this at a
contemporary hotel.
